On behalf of ALERA SA, the Adelaide-based Members of the Fair Work Commission are to conduct a full-day basic course in advocacy. As a prelude to the course proper, the Commission will host a function where members can meet the Adelaide-based Members of the Commission.

The evening function will be of interest to all local IR practitioners and the full-day course will be relevant to anyone seeking to appear before the FWC and of particular interest to developing advocates and those seeking a refresher.

Registration numbers for the full course are strictly limited due to the need for mentors, Commission Members and courtrooms.
The Course includes registration for the Meet the Commission function.
Early registration is encouraged to avoid disappointment.

The introductory and networking event is open to all members, and compulsory for course participants. It will start with the introductory sessions for the course to be held in one of the FWC hearing rooms on North Terrace, where Members will provide attendees with an overview of the FWC and its major jurisdictions. It will be followed by an opportunity to meet the local Commission Members and other IR professionals network at the Intercontinental Hotel, with light refreshments and nibbles available.

The course the following day will include the following:

  • The theory of advocacy
  • The strategy and practice of advocacy in the FWC including the stages of proceedings
  •  Evidence – approach (rules of evidence and practice as applied by the FWC), witnesses, documents and the process of proving and tendering
  • Case preparation and presentation of simulated cases (Moots) - with the support of the FWC Members and experienced practitioners
  • Observations and tips from the Bench

The course will be conducted entirely in-person at the FWC Adelaide premises on North Terrace.

Registration will be at 9:00am, with the course commencing at 9:30am and the course will conclude at 4.30pm.
